Tomorrow's word of the day

19 Jan 2009 04:27 pm

I'm sorry I haven't posted anything yet today, but I've been having way too much fun with the  "Inaugural Words" interactive graphic in the NY Times to think cogent thoughts. Or, really, I've been trying and failing to draw conclusions about the various Presidents from the words they emphasized in their inaugural addresses. Maybe others have had better success.

Also, any bets on what will be the most-used word in Barak Obama's address tomorrow?

"Together," hands down.

I thought the most interesting thing in that NY Times gadget was the rise of the word "America" in popularity. It was barely a top-rater until Nixon, and then it stayed at the top almost consistently since.

Please tell me more about this "Barak" character. I realize you emphasize relativism in matters of vocabulary and grammar but can we all agree on how to spell the man's name?

In one of AM articles last year by your James Fallows I encountered the word: 'EDUCE'

This was a new one to me, and had me soon riffling through dictionaries - to learn it's roughly equivalent to 'elicit'.
Quite a nice (in both senses) word - so good one James !
